What a Scouting Trip

How about the trip a Red Sox scout made to San Diego in 1936 to look at a couple guys making some noise in the Pacific Coast League. Ted Williams was the prime catch, but his teammate Bobby Doerr passed the grade as well. He would join Williams in Boston and put together a Hall of Fame career of his own as one of the premier second basemen of his era. Known for playing the game hard, he was also respected as a fine gentleman prompting legendary baseball man Joe Cronin to call him "as fine a man as ever wore a spiked shoe".
