What a great hitter this guy must have been to have a career batting average of .306 despite being regarded as, according to baseball historian Bill James,"the slowest man to ever play major league baseball well". Ernie Lombardi was a rock solid catcher who was behind the plate for Johnny Vander Meer's back to back no hitters. This is my tribute to the tobacco company ads of the era. They may have been lousy for the lungs but certainly helped promote the game and put a few extra much needed dollars in the player's pockets. A great member of the Hall of Fame, Lombardi had massive hands that he would interlock like a golf grip when he grabbed a bat and went to the plate.
