The Real Life Casey at the Bat

His career batting average of .346 is the fifth highest in MLB history and legend has it that Ed Delahanty was the inspiration for the mighty Casey at the bat. He was the epitome of the hard playing, hard living big Irishman and his gambling and drinking habits may have kept him from being an even more impressive force in baseball's early days. One of four outfielders of the 1894 Phillies that all batted over .400. He may also have had one of the most dramatic deaths in Hall of Fame history when in a drunken stupor he either jumped or fell over Niagra Falls.
