Here is one of the guys whose career bridged the Negro Leagues and MLB. Monte Irvin was a fantastic outfielder that hit .358 in his Negro League career and then went on to a fine seven year career in the majors. He was part of the first all-black outfield in history and was the guy who batted before Bobby Thompson when he hit his shot heard around the world. A class act through and through, he was picked by Leo Durocher to take a young rookie under his wing and introduce him to life in the Big Apple under the spotlight of being a baseball star. Willie Mays was the rookie, he adjusted well, and credits Irvin with making the transition so smooth.
