Roger Bresnahan is in the Hall of Fame as much for his innovations as for his playing ability. He was the first player to use shin pads which begs the question, what were they thinking before that? He also invented the batting helmet, developing the idea while recovering from a beanball in the head. He was a solid player with a .279 batting average and catchers everywhere owe him a debt of thanks for bringing some common sense to the position. A fun painting to do with those primitive pads.
