Here is another of those early pioneers that took the game to new heights. Buck Ewing had no peers on the baseball field. He could do it all; career .303 hitter, he could run, he had a great baseball brain, and he played the catcher position better than any before and few since. Reporters and baseball men of the time called him everything from one of the best five players of all time, and no less a judge than Connie Mack called him the greatest catcher of all time. I love painting these historic figures for many reasons, especially showcasing the primitive equipment of the times.
