The importance of Rube Foster to the early days of Negro League baseball cannot be understated. He excelled as a player, manager, and executive. One of the great pitchers in baseball history (as his estimated record of 51-4 in 1905 will attest), he founded one of the most successful black baseball teams (Chicago American Giants), and maybe most importantly organized the most important professional league for African-Americans (Negro National League).
