His career spanned the early days of baseball, from 1890 to 1909, and George Davis was great in so many aspects of the game. An early switch hitter, he ended up with 2,665 hits and a career .295 average. He also stole bases and played both the outfield and infield with great skill. His legacy seemed to disappear however, and it wasn't until 1998 that he was inducted into Cooperstown. A couple years earlier great baseball man Bill James called him the best player that had not been inducted. His life did not end happily. He passed away in a mental institution after suffering from syphilis, survived by a less than happy wife.
