Meet Sam Rice, a guy who played from 1915 to 1934. He earned his way into Cooperstown by being a great hitter. A career .322 kind of good. The tragic part of his career is that it ended with 2,987 hits, the most by any player below the magic 3,000. He claimed he wasn't aware how close he was when he retired or he would have stuck around to hit the milestone. These were the days before intense media coverage. He was given the opportunity to come back and get the 13 a few years after he had retired but he declined saying he was too out of shape.
