Honus Wagner was without doubt the best shortstop of his era, by a wide margin. Many good baseball writers at the time also said he was the best first baseman, second baseman, third baseman, and outfielder. Throw in the fact that he won 8 batting titles, had over 3,400 hits, 1,700 RBIs, 700 steals and a career average of .329 and you see why he is held in the highest of esteem by baseball fans and historians. A charter member of the Hall of Fame and the first guy to have his autograph on a Louisville Slugger, Honus Wagner was as good a player as the game has ever seen.
