His Battle Cry Was Ee-Yah

Hughie Jennings is a hard guy to describe. His career average of .311 is proof of his batting ability, hitting over .400 one year. He was hit by a pitch a record 51 times one season, once being knocked unconscious for three days. He was the best fielding shortstop of his era, recording a record 425 putouts one year. He won 1,184 games as a manager. He survived many tragic accidents; from diving into an empty pool at night to a terrible car accident that left him near dead. What he will be remembered for more than anything in baseball however, is the flapping of his arms and the raising of his leg while he hollered "Ee-Yah" from the third base coaches box. He was a true character of baseball's early days and deserving member of Cooperstown.
