Three times he led the league in winning percentage but it was his performance in the 1911 World Series that made Chief Bender a baseball legend. All he did that series was throw three complete games with a 1.04 ERA to help lead the Philadelphia Athletics to the championship. A member of the Ojibwe tribe, he faced the taunts and racism of the time but was known as one of the kindest and finest men to play the game. Many credit him as the first to throw a slider. A very fun painting to do and a deserving member of Cooperstown.
