One of the great ball smashers of not only his generation, but all of baseball history, Hank Greenberg hit 58 home runs in 1938. Up to then, only Babe Ruth had ever hit more in a season and there is more than one expert of those times that says Greenberg would have beat Ruth's 60 if pitchers hadn't started intentionally walking him so often to protect the Babe's cherished record. He unselfishly volunteered for service in WWII and gave up four years of ball in the prime of his career. Still his numbers jump off the page; .313 career average, 331 Home runs, 4X AL home run leader. What a deserving member of the Hall of Fame.
