A Pioneer Behind the Plate

His numbers don't dazzle you; a career .253 hitter, 1,345 hits, 11 home runs, these aren't Cooperstown-like numbers. But there is more to the great game of baseball than just what a player can do at the plate. Ray Schalk was a quick and agile catcher, the first of his kind. In my opinion there are two positions on the field where defensive ability supersedes hitting when it comes to team success. Those are shortstop and catcher. It was a real pleasure to paint this pioneer that was rightfully given his place among baseball greats.
